While may be the most wonderful time of the year, it can also be the most dangerous for drivers. Traffic incidents are always plenty during the holidays, and the possibility of inclement weather adds to the list of reasons why Christmas weekend in Charlotte is one of the worst times to be on the road.
However, thanks to modern technology, we can now get real-time traffic reports that allow us to go to and fro while avoiding bumper-to-bumper traffic. But that alone won’t prevent the pitfalls of driving during the holidays.
To help you reach your destination, Toyota of North Charlotte has driving safety tips for when you brave the highways this Christmas weekend.
Practice safe driving on the highway this Christmas weekend!
Tip #1 – Plan your route.
“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of a cure (Benjamin Franklin).” Prepping for your trip should start with ensuring you get enough rest the night before, creating and checking off a list of items to pack, and checking the weather and traffic reports periodically before you head out. It’s also a good idea to download and utilize a traffic report app like Waze to ensure your route is clear.
Tip #2 – Avoid distractions while driving.
Once you head out, it’s imperative that you focus on the road. The highway is notorious for distracted driving, and traffic might tempt you to occupy your time on your phone, eating, or playing with the radio. DON’T. Keep any and all distractions out of sight, out of reach, and out of mind. And keep your hands on the wheel!
Tip #3 – Pay attention to changing speed limits.
On the highway, speed limits might vary and change along the way. Don’t forget to look out for speed limit signs while you practice safe driving near Charlotte or out of state. Not only does it keep you protected, but it can also save you from paying a hefty speeding ticket during the time of year you tend to spend the most money!
Tip #4 – Be aware of drunk drivers.
The holidays are a time to drink and be merry. Unfortunately, many people choose to get behind the wheel of a vehicle after doing so. You need to keep yourself and your fellow travelers safe! Learn to spot drunk driving on the highway by paying attention to suspicious behavior, such as:
- swerving in and out of lanes
- sudden stops and accelerations
- headlights off
Practice our Charlotte Toyota defensive driving techniques! And remember, if YOU have been drinking, do not drive. Pass the keys to a designated driver, call a taxi or Uber driver to pick you up, or spend the night.
