Spring is just around the corner! Are you planning a road trip out of state, around our beautiful state of North Carolina or just around the greater Charlotte area? Then you need to perform a safety inspection and make sure your car is in tip top shape so your trip doesn’t get off to a bumpy start or go a bit longer than expected. We’re going to go over some DIY car safety inspections that our auto mechanics here at Toyota of North Charlotte recommend you do before you hit the open road.
Let it rip! This is the most fun part of your safety inspection. Make sure that your car’s horn is still blowing loud and strong. You don’t want to be in a dangerous situation on the road and have no voice to be heard.
Wind shield wipers–
Streaky or squeaky? Make sure that your car’s windshield wipers have been replaced recently and they’re still performing well. You are going to be on new roads far from Charlotte that you’re not too familiar with, the last thing you need is to be visually impaired if you’re not driving in the most ideal weather or if something gets on your windshield.
Are you shining bright? Check to see that all of your cars lights are working properly. This includes your regular lights, high beams, rear lights, brake lights and turn signals. You can also make sure that all of your car’s interior cabin lighting is working too while you’re at it and its daylight lights if your car has those as well. P.S. It’s a lot easier to check your brake lights with a friend!
You obviously want to make sure that the things that’re connecting you to the road are in great shape before you take a long trip from Charlotte. Check for any cracks in your tires that could potentially cause a flat and that your tires tire pressure is at their recommended psi. It’s also good to check your tires tread before a trip, and you can do this with a penny! Just take a penny and place Abe head first into the tires ribbing. You’ll want to do this at multiple places around each tire looking for the areas that’re most worn. If you can see all of Abe’s hair, then it’s recommended that you get new tires. If Abe’s hair is covered only until his forehead, new tires are suggested soon. Make sure to pack a car jack, lug wrench, a fully inflated spare tire and your owner’s manual in case you need to change a flat tire.
Make sure your brake pads are still good. This is a very important part of your safety inspection too! You can check these by checking for brake dust on your wheels, listening for squeaks when you brake or by feeling a vibration wen your brake.
Check your car’s fluids and fill them up if they’re running low! These make sure that your car is running smoothly. Check the brake fluid, power steering fluid.
Make sure that you have a GPS and a GPS holder for your trip, even if you’re only going around Charlotte. And yes we highly recommend a holder for your phone if you’re using that as your GPS. You will also want to make sure that you have a phone charger and a car phone charger in your car. If you were to get lost or stranded anywhere you’ll want to be able to call for help.
