Can you believe that 2017 is almost over? The time around New Year’s Eve is a dangerous time to be on the road because of drunk drivers. So, before you watch the ball drop it’s important to make sure that you can identify impaired drivers while you’re on the road. Our team at Toyota of North Charlotte is here to help improve your defensive driving at night! We are going to go over some of the top signs of a drunk driver and what you should do if you encounter one on the road.
Top signs of a drunk driver
It can be hard to tell if someone is driving under the influence. Charlotte drunk drivers can act anywhere from erratic to oblivious on the road. That’s why we put together some of the top drunk driving habits to help support your New Year’s safe driving.
- Going drastically below the speed limit
Not all drunk drivers in Charlotte drive above the speed limit. If you notice a driver that is going under the speed limit by 10 mph or more on New Year’s Eve, there is a chance that they may be drinking and driving.
- Driving in the center lane or on a lane marker
Some drunk drivers like to drive in the middle of the road. That means that they will usually try to stay in the middle lane if they are on a multilane highway. When they are on smaller road two-lane roads they will usually try to drive on the center marker.
- Stopping when they shouldn’t
Another sign of a Charlotte drunk driver is stopping on the road when they shouldn’t. This could be at green lights, crosswalks with no pedestrians or for extended times at stop signs.
Other signs of drunk driving include driving without headlights, sudden stops, inconsistent signaling, tailgating, taking wide turns, weaving on the road, and almost hitting objects or cars.
Drive safe in Charlotte on New Year’s Eve
If you notice someone that is driving like anything we mentioned above here is what to do:
- Get out of their way
Drunk drivers are unpredictable. If you notice that someone may be driving in Charlotte impaired it’s important that you get out of their way immediately. There is no way for you to know their mental state in that moment and it’s better to be safe than sorry.
- Stay behind them
Stay far behind any suspected drunk drivers. You never know if they will unexpectedly stop, turn around, or crash. This will give you enough time and space to stop in case any of this does happen.
- Make sure your seatbelt is on
You should always be driving with your seatbelt on! But make sure to double check that you and your passengers’ seat belts are on if you suspect you are driving around an impaired driver.
- Call the police
It’s important for the safety of drivers on the road that you report any suspicious drivers to local law enforcement when you’re out of danger.
