New tire research has just been released from AAA and people are stunned. You could still be in danger even when you’re following the state laws and industry regulations about when you should change your car tires. Our auto service team at Toyota of North Charlotte is here to go over what AAA found and how you can check and see if you need to replace your car tires and stay safe on the road.
Are you driving on dangerously worn car tires?
Your Charlotte Toyota’s car tire tread is what keeps your vehicle gripped to the road. And your tire tread is especially important when you’re driving your vehicle in the rain and your car tires have to push water out of the way to get contact with the road. That why you want to replace your vehicles tires when its recommended, to prevent you from hydroplaning.
Unfortunately, it seems that the current state laws and industry recommendations on replacing your tires are outdated. Right now, state laws don’t require that you change your vehicles tires until your car tires have 2/32” of tread left on them. AAA did some testing on worn tires compared to new tires. They tested the stopping distance of vehicles with their tires worn down to of 4/32” tread (twice the minimum legal amount) verses those with new tires. The results that they found were astonishing.
- A passenger car stopped 87 feet further on warn tires and a light track stopped 86 feet further on warn tires.
- The passenger car has a 33 percent reduction in handling ability, and a 28 percent reduction in handling on the light truck.
That means that “If tested side-by-side at 60 mph, vehicles with worn tires would still be traveling at an alarming 40 mph when reaching the same distance it takes for vehicles with new tires to make a complete stop.” This shows that there is a pretty big difference between new tires and worn tires. It makes you realize that you and your family could be in danger when you’re driving on wet roads.
Do you want to make sure that your Charlotte car tires are in tip-top shape? Then test the tread on your Charlotte Toyota’s tires. You can do this easily by just using a quarter! In the past we’ve recommended testing your tires tread with a penny, but now it’s time for an upgrade. Put the quarter in your tire tread, if you tire is touching the top of George Washington’s hair, your tread is too low. We would recommend getting new tires to avoid accidents on wet roads.
